Logan Lerman did a lot of research for his role in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The 18-year-old actor tells Teen Vogue, “I’ve been studying mythology for months, reading about Perseus, Poseidon, Apollo, Medusa.” Wanna see the movie without cracking a textbook first? Here’s your Greek cheat sheet for who’s who in mythology.

For starters, Percy is a demigod, which means he has one human parent — his mother — and his father is Poseidon, ruler of the sea. Because of his lineage, Percy has special aquatic powers like breathing underwater. Water can also heal him whenever he’s hurt.

Poseidon has two brothers, Zeus and Hades. The three of them made a pact to no longer have children, so when Percy’s true identity is revealed, not all of the gods are pleased.

Twentieth Century Fox International is inviting action fantasy fans to take part in a webcast Q&A session with the stars of upcoming movie PERCY JACKSON AND THE LIGHTNING THIEF.
Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, and Jake Abel will be answering questions online, live from the international press junket in Athens, Greece. After the chat, participants will have the exclusive opportunity to view a never-before-seen clip from the film.

Based on the first of a series of acclaimed novels, PERCY JACKSON AND THE LIGHTNING THIEF is set in a modern world where the twelve gods of Mount Olympus (perched 600 stories above the planet on New York’s landmark Empire State Building) are alive and are creating a new race of young mythological heroes who are demigods – half mortal, half god.
Percy, the teenage son of Poseidon, is suspected by Zeus of stealing his lightning bolt, the universe’s most powerful weapon. To prove his innocence and avoid a devastating war among the gods, Percy embarks on a transcontinental odyssey to find the real thief. Along his journey, he confronts fierce enemies determined to stop him, and attempts to save his mother from the deadly clutches of another Greek god, Hades.

Fantasy saga based on the books by US writer Rick Riordan…

Following a disastrous incursion into bubblegum high-school romance territory (I Love You, Beth Cooper), Chris Columbus, director of the first two Harry Potters, returns to his comfort zone for this episodic and mirthless fantasy saga based on the first of a series of fantasy books by US writer Rick Riordan.

Mulching together the angsty teen intrigue of Harry Potter and the frigid-and-proud flag waving of Twilight, the film sees Zac Efron lookalike Logan Lerman (Gamer) playing an underachiever who turns out to be a sword-swinging demigod when he discovers his birth was the result of the god Poseidon (Kevin McKidd) having a quick fling with dowdy New York housewife Catherine Keener. When his mother is kidnapped by Hades (Steve Coogan), Percy is charged with finding a number of trinkets dotted across North America to avert a crisis on Mount Olympus (located just above the New York cloud cover – who knew?).

That Percy risks life and limb to preserve the family unit is typical Columbus, and the film works best when playing on the idea that no amount of bravado is enough to mask our desire for parental love. Yet it’s not enough to compensate for the computer-game-style plotting, which is largely based on us picking up narrative nuggets that slot into place later on.

Friday, Logan Lerman’s poised to become a star in the title role of “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.” The fantasy adventure is in the Harry Potter vein, only with Greek gods instead of wizardry.

“I’ve loved movies and I’ve just always wanted to be in films since I was like 5 years old or so,” said the Los Angeles native.

Lerman made his film debut in Mel Gibson’s “The Patriot” when he was 7. At 12, he had a turn on TV’s “Jack & Bobby.”

“That’s where I started, really,” he said in a one-on-one interview at Manhattan’s Empire State Building (which figures prominently in the movie’s climax).

In “Percy Jackson,” he plays a fatherless teen with dyslexia, disciplinary issues, a stepfather he hates and a mother (Catherine Keener) who’s been kidnapped and taken to hell. It turns out Percy’s a demigod, the son of Poseidon – the downside is he has to fight monsters such as a fire-breathing Hydra and snake-haired Medusa (Uma Thurman).

Standing in for Hogwarts is Camp Half-Blood, where Percy learns to fight and finds allies in Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario) and Grover (Brandon T. Jackson).

Logan Lerman is the new kid on the block. And he may be standing on the threshold of becoming the new teen-sensation as he portrays the lead role of Percy Jackson in the adventure cum fantasy flick ‘Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief’. And he’s excited, nervous and a tad apprehensive.

So, is he geared up for the fame that may kiss his forehead? And he takes us into his dreamland. “To be honest with you, it is interesting. People are just going to scream ‘Percy Jackson’ all the time. It’s going to be crazy. But somehow I can’t imagine people knowing who I am from any movie. So if that does happen, I will be very surprised,” Percy….oops….I mean…..Logan says. • Read full story »
