BlackBook.com: An Interview with Logan Lerman

For an eighteen year-old actor, Logan Lerman already has quite an impressive body of work. From the critically acclaimed television series Jack & Bobby to indie films like My One and Only and action movies like 3:10 to Yuma, Lerman’s been hitting Hollywood on all fronts. You can now add “epic” to his list of credits. In his newest film, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightening Thief, Lerman plays the title character who is the prime suspect in the disappearance of Zeus’ lightning bolt. Percy embarks on a journey to save his mom and catch the real thief.

The movie, directed by Harry Potter helmer Chris Columbus, has an all-star cast that includes Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan and Catherine Keener who plays Percy’s mother. Even though the movie is based on the best-selling teen book series of the same name, Lerman assures us that this is a film for all ages. “This movie relates to people in general,” he says. “It’s about the life struggle of taking your weaknesses and trying to make them into your strengths.”

How did you first get the acting bug?
I’m from Los Angeles and it was accessible. There’s always a place to wait in line for an audition and I kind of begged my parents to take me. My mom nurtured my career and helped me climb the ladder. I have had a passion for movies from a young age. I first got interested in acting when I was probably four or five.

What movies inspired you growing up?
Movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. I remember the first time I saw these movies in the theater and it really got me into filmmaking. • Read full story »

Already a hit in its opening weekend in theaters (raking in $39 million), Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief has been compared to the Harry Potter series and its star, 18-year-old Logan Lerman, has been hailed as the next Daniel Radcliffe. What else does the fantasy film share in common with Harry Potter? More than you might think!

1. The story is a mythological adventure to rival Harry Potter. The premise: American teenager (Lerman) discovers that he’s the demi-god son of Poseidon and a mortal (Catherine Keener), is accused by Zeus of stealing his lightning bolt. Just like Harry, Percy’s part of a teen trio that includes pals Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario). Look out Harry, Hermione and Ron!

2. Director Chris Columbus knows his way around a fantastical tale: He already helmed two Potter pics, 2001′s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and 2002′s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. • Read full story »

Chris Columbus has already steered a best-selling children’s-book series into a mega-successful big-screen franchise, helming the first two “Harry Potter” films. There’s no reason he can’t do it a second time.

That’s his task with the modern-day tale of “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” the first film adapted from the work of author Rick Riordan. After selecting Daniel Radcliffe to become Harry, Columbus plucked 18-year-old Logan Lerman for the role of Percy. He’s the son of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, and a human mother, who’s completely unaware of his lineage until he’s pulled into a scheme to rescue Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt before the gods use planet Earth as their personal battlefield.

Percy joins up with Grover (Brandon T. Jackson), who’s half-man, half-goat, and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), who’s the daughter of Athena. Together, they set off on a quest to save the world. Before the film arrives in theaters Friday (February 12), here’s what you need to know. • Read full story »

Actor Logan Lerman recently had a pretty special 18th birthday celebration while traveling to promote his first big movie, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. “We were just heading to Europe,” he tells Rachael, “so I had a good time in London and Athens!”

Rachael hands the mic to some teens in the audience who are eager to know if the actor has picked out a date for his prom. “No date yet, but I’m totally planning on going!”

The Lightning Thief ($38.8 million) and The Wolfman ($36.5 million) held their positions; Avatar ($30 million) added to its substantial bottom line. More results:

• The $95 million Lightning Thief, full name: Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Not to Be Confused for Harry Potter, Although We Wouldn’t Mind If You Did—Confuse Us, That Is, and the $150 million Wolfman both opened OK. But, given their budgets, both have a ways to go.

There’s been a lot of Percy Jackson 2 talk in recent weeks. So what has been said and how likely is a sequel?

There are five books in the Percy Jackson series, so far. The next installment is ‘The Sea Of Monsters’ which sees Percy, Annabeth, and his half-brother Tyson the cyclopes sailing across a dangerous ocean to save the kidnapped Grover and retrieve the Golden Fleece (the only thing that can stop Camp Half-Blood being made vulnerable to an attack by the Titans).

At the London press conference last week director Chris Columbus said “If we are successful enough, I’d love to make another film almost immediately with these guys. We had a wonderful time. I love the enthusiasm and lack of cynicism. I want to go back to work quickly.” • Read full story »

Carter Jenkins, actor from ‘Valentine’s Day’ talks about Logan Lerman.

On who would play him in a movie: “Adam Brody. I like him. He could pull me off. Also, there’s this guy Logan Lerman. He’s a really great actor and he’s my age and he gets a lot of work that I want to get.”
